Bodum Columbia press

Postby phil2spill » Sun May 06, 2007 1:36 pm

Having just trashed yet another cafetiere glass liner, I thought I would go for a stainless steel thermos type pot this time. So I got a Bodum Columbia:

and must say I wish I'd bought one many glass liners ago. It's a really beautifully made vacuum jug, combined with a one-piece plunger. This is a big improvement over the old 3-part designs, having far fewer dirt-traps and a silicone blade seal. Admittedly this comes at the cost of using a plastic moulding, but I very much doubt I'll taste the difference. Similarly, I know some palettes can detect stainless steel, but mine isn't one of them. Really good value for money for such a well-made object I think.

Thanks for that Barry, I've changed the duff link to an amazon one.

I got the 1 litre / 8-cup size one for £36 from a local shop, which i thought was pretty good really, especially as i won't be having to buy a new £7 glass liner every other month! ;)

you little bargin hunter .... :D :D
actually if i consider that i have replaced 8 glass liners over the last 12 months in the shop its probably something i should consider.

I was amazed to see these (and lots of them) everywhere in Copenhagen. No expense spared clearly when restaurants have over a dozen lined up near the machines....

I think I am going to have to get one....

We bought a small one of these a few weeks ago; my wife spotted it on sale much reduced.
Very happy with it.

Bought it partly to put in the camping coffee kit. The thought of a food box full of broken
glass out in the middle of nowhere was a bit daunting. Not to mention the loss of coffee.
It works really well for camping -- tried it yesterday morning in fact, camped by the lakeside,
crisp 12C morning, nice brew of Kenya AA to watch the parade of twenty black swans gliding
on the lake :) What's really good is that, being insulated, it keeps the coffee warm!

I decided I needed a bit of a change so I roasted some Monsooned Malabar. That was a change!

You mean getting one rather than getting a dozen?

I'd really like to cup coffees brewed with double walled vs traditional glass to see how the extra retained heat affects the brewing.

Plus I just want all the toys....
