I don't know if this is possible, but I am starting to grow fond of websites that make use of https . . .

Is it possible to implement such a thing into our beloved forum?

Technically yes, though I don't know if the hosting used by Phil or Phil himself would do so.

I'm curious if Phil would consider this, or if it is just a ridiculous request from a paranoid user

So, Phil?

I don't understand why this would be of interest. We don't do financial transactions here (at least not above board) or would this be aimed at protecting the rest of the world from Pete's jokes? :?

I don't think it really is important, for that matter. But if it's easily done, why not consider it? You never know if someone is watching, but why not blind their eyes preventively?

Furthermore, I just like to encrypt stuff

principally I'm with you on this one Adrian, though being a little webhost myself and considering this is 'just' a coffee forum I wouldn't bother. Having self-signed certificates sucks as every browser nowadays makes you jump through hoops to accept them, 'real' certificates cost money and free certificates from startssl.com only last a year. I do have to redo ~10 throughout the year and the process to do so is complicated.

The only thing where this would make sense for me is the clubroom (everybody on your WLAN or local LAN segment will be able to sniff the contents there, so can every technician in any ISP between you and the TMC server) and to protect your login data. But frankly, if you use a password on TMC that you use anywhere else, especially somewhere related to financial transactions, you're bust anyway.

If somebody steals my login and posts awkward stuff on here, I'll kindly ask site management for help :)

Oh and SSL *will* make the site slower to react and increase the load on the server, though I don't know if this would be significant considering the amount of traffic TMC generates (which I don't know).

Hmm, I didn't know providing https is so complicated (I could have guessed, however).

As for passwords, I've set things up quite secure. So no real worries there.

The 'you' in the above post was not directed at you specifically, just to make that clear :)

Ask him if you like :) I think he will probably not want the extra work load though for the reasons outlined by Lukas.

You're probably right (as is often the case).

I'll wait untill he reads this thread. No hurries, no demands, just curiousity :)

I had my identity stolen once, they gave it back two days later - said being me depressed them so bad - I got an invite to the funeral a few weeks later - never made it. Moral is the best security is having a rubbish life - then nobody wants to steal it.
