Having to log in once a week?

Postby syscrusher » Tue May 19, 2009 7:33 am

It seems to be about once a week. I click in to TMC, and I find I'm not logged in. Is this normal? If so , what's the reason?

It doesn't affect any other forums I visit, and it's the same on my iPhone as well as on Firefox3 on my macbook.

It happens to everyone at irregular intervals. Another possible cause is Phil updating things on the server.

Actually, mine requires being refreshed once a week. Always just thought it was the cookie expiring.

I sometimes get bumped out every couple of days. Cookie expiration is certainly one of the reasons this is happening. Of course, my computer could well be on the fritz again as well :)

Is there a reason for that?

Why not set them to never expire?

It's good security for all sorts of reasons. Not in the least if somone doesn't visit TMC for a prolonged period it ensures that they are not always logged in on their machine. People come and go, never return, potentially get computer viruses and sell computers, so it ensures that not everyone using a computer once used to access the site is logged in by proxy, courtesey of a forgotten membership :)

Well said, Cakey -

I've just come to this post, to note something rather more serious than having to log in monce a week. It's taken me 20 mins to fix it, so i'll describe the problem, to save others the time:

When I went to log into TMC, i got nothing. It just returned me to the login dialog again. And again.

So, I tried a few other sites - gmail etc. All not working. Either getting stuck in redirect loops, or doing nothing at all.

I'm running windows XP (slightly tweaked), so i set about fixing the problem. It was soon obvious that my browser wasn't accepting any cookies. I cleared the cache. Tried other browsers (IE, firefox - first browser is Chrome). Did a system restore, rebooted, all to no improvement.

Some googling later - it turns out i had accidentally changed the month, in the system clock. I was discussing my movements, and had no internet connection, so rather than pull up google calendar i had to use the system one. I altered the month - and didn't alter it back. Bang - all cookies cease to work.

Reset the clock, reboot - all fixed !!! :)
