Coffee POI for GPS

Postby wvb » Sat May 19, 2007 2:02 pm

as GPS systems are getting cheaper and the amount of owners is constantly increasing I was wondering if it would be a good idea to collect all good places concerning coffee and put them into a POI (Point Of Interest).
GPS systems now offer routing by car, bike and on foot..

Info needed would be:

Category:
Name:
Street:
Number:
Postalcode:
City:
Country:
Phone:
Rating (1-5):
GPS position checked (Y-N):

this info could then be entered in a program and saved as a POI file for all sorts of devices (TomTom, Garmin, ...)

I could start a topic for it and people can reply with places they want to add.
The latest POI(s) will always be in the first post and updated when needed, update info (what was added) will also be in the first post.
I wouldn't mind keeping it up to date and creating the new POI's

This is just an idea,
please share your thoughts

cheers,
Wietse.

Sounds good to me Wietse. With the holiday season looming, people will be looking for half decent places wherever they are going, and of course it is always handy to have easy directions even to local coffee outlets.

Very interesting. I am not familiar with it. How would I be able to access or download these POIs? (Assuming I have a GPS enabled PDA.)

The POI's will be attached here to the first post (if allowed offcourse), they will be mostly less than 100KB in size.
They will be put in a zip file.
You just download, unzip.
If you have TomTom, you just need to copy/paste the files into the folder of your device which contains the map.

If this idea will be a go, I will look into this deeper and provide info for other systems.

Very good idea: I think we can put that sort of thing in the 'DOWNLOAD' section.

every navigation system has its own format for POI's but I use a program called POI Edit and that can create POI's for a lot of different systems including Route66, TomTom & Garmin

yeah, definitely think this could be useful, and we are considering a few other possibilities for the site to integrate with this! Could end up being a great community effort!
