I had a chance to go back to Belfast this week and try out Cafe Africa.
Big mistake. I was initially impressed with their roaster on display and a brand spanking, shiney 2 group LM.
I ordered a double shot. the girl appeared at my table with what looked like a weak lager. The crema, if you could call it that was like a pale scum floating on top of an awful tasting brown liquid.
Yes, i know i tasted it, but i had to know how bad it was. I think my backflushes would probably taste better.
Directly opposite this cafe was a coffee shop, was another one called Clements. They are part of a chain here. Not sure if you have them in your neck of the woods.
They had a sign in the window stating UK Barista Champion 2004, 1st and 2nd place. Looking good i thought. Another disaster. The shot had slightly better crema, but it was barely warm and tasted terrible. Obviously the barista champ was no longer employed here, because this was only fit for the drain as was the shot from Cafe Africa.
So, avoid both if you're ever in Belfast.
