My professional roasting setup

Postby lukas » Thu Sep 13, 2007 12:03 pm

I just roasted a batch of Hasbeans Premium point-on to starting of rolling second crack and am really curious how it will come out in the naked portafilter. Light was nice so I thought I'd put up a picture of my very professional uber hightec roasting setup:

The beans in detail here:

I look forward tasting them next week (that's right, I had to roast in advance as I'm away until tuesday) as they look quite yummy in real life and like I hit the right roast level this time.

Since I use the digital thermometer, stopwatch and since I actually log my roasts (manually), the cup quality has improved again and I'm getting the hang of reproducebility a tiny little bit.
Who nees a Gene when you get your daily workout for free with this roaster ;)

Cooling was done with the help of a vacuum cleaner but still lasted 5 minutes because I have nothing big enough to get all beans into while cooling, so it had to be done in smaller batches ;)

This week I like my coffee luke-warm.

Looks like a nice roast!! Possibly not the most even? But haven't roasted hb premium, and anyway, uneven can be good or bad depending on the beans...

I'm jealous, as, due to silly clinical trial rubbish i once again can't really drink coffee(caffeine and insomnia don't mix well)

Red bush tea, sigh!

Hope it tastes as good as it looks(on tuesday!)

I couldn't resist (of course) and just had a shot that was definitly much nicer than than from the last roast (which was way too light). Tuesday will be a happy day :)

I hope you get paid well for these clinic experiments ;)

Looking good Lukas, by the way, is that a "pot" plant in the back right?

Do you use a straight roasting 'curve' or other profiles?

It's actually a coffee plant, Patrick :)
Neo, I tried experimenting with 'profiles' like removing some heat during first crack, but this gas thingy is not very well controllable. Currently I'm just trying to achieve reproduceable roasts with it.

I'm working (in my mind) on an online roast database, so I can possibly upload my profiles sometime in the future :)

If you wish to reduce the temperature faster, maybe just lift the pot a bit higher. By that way, heat loss is very observable

I'm away from the roaster for this week and out of greens (nearly), so it'll take a while!

With my last roast, I just let the lid open all the time, and this seemde to work very well and lead to a less smokey taste in the coffee (at least that what I keep telling to myself)

it's true that you need to let the smoke leave the roasting chamber a bit
