Profile curves

Postby phil » Mon Nov 17, 2003 9:21 am

OK, I've just taken delivery of my new Extech EA15 datalogging thermometer. Guess who's going to be swanking profile curves from now on? It'll also help me get better reproducibility in my roasts, something I'm struggling for on lighter roasts where I'm aiming for somewhere before second crack. Watch out for the curves, but not immediately - I roasted three batches (750g of green) this weekend, so I'll not be roasting again for a day or three.

Phil - who feels the need to be ultra geeky to overcome the deep ache of jealousy he feels toward his friends who went to Milan this weekend

Here's the achieved profile for the Costa Rica El Legendario, roasted to just before 2nd crack. The wiggles in the curve are caused by the drum rotation - sometimes the end of the thermocouple comes out of the bean mass for a second or two. I haven't worked out a solution for this yet.

We're looking at
  • Around 15:10 - 1st snap of 1st crack
  • Around 15:20 - drop the voltage to around 215 (from 240) as a way of dropping the heat (see the upcoming article - about half written)
  • Around 16:00 - 1st crack is rolling
  • 17:15 - 1st crack is complete
  • 18:40 - I'm concerned I may just have heard a snap of 2nd so dump the roast into the cooling tray

Hopefully I'll get better at this.

Actually not dissimilar in price for a lot more functionality which is why I bought it. Also some of the guys on the SM list recommend this thing and Tom Owen himself uses the 422130, an earlier model which is quite similar.

It's uncovering some interesting things about my roasting and giving me a lot to think about.

Your first crack is so late! I thought you aimed for low 10s?
