adjusting Iberital MC2 for french press

Postby jon » Fri Oct 24, 2008 4:45 pm

I normally use my MC2 for espresso, but am playing about with it for FP at the moment. I have adjusted it for a much coarser grind, but am finding it hard to know when I've got the 'right' setting: I normally use a bodum grinder (with far fewer settings) for FP. The Iberital gives a more even grind, and tastes a bit smoother, but not sure how to get the grind just right with this...

Any suggestions?

Other than 1) adjust 2) brew 3) taste 4) repeat sorry - not really. It took me quite some time to manage grind vs dose vs brewing style/time, and I still frequently mess up (as in 'hhmmm this cup could've been a little less this and a little more that').

Ah - no magic solution, then :) With espresso, you can see the rate of flow etc...but you don't get the same with FP...

No, with french press it's all about the taste. I just remembered that I wrote this article in our wiki a while ago, that might be helpful, though!

Thanks. Playing with grind and dose...

Grinds are staying floating at the moment. Does that mean the grind's too coarse?

I'd say thats a good thing. a good way to do it is to go to a decent coffee retailer and ask them to grind you a sample suitable for french press to compare to. its a nightmare switching from espresso to french press and back on the iberital. It might just be me but recently i was sure that if you keep dialing in the fine direction it eventually starts becoming coarse again. It seemed that the dial doesnt stop at the finest point, it just starts unwinding if you know what i mean...?

Thanks - ah, I thought many of the grinds were meant to fall in the pot?

Good idea re buying a sample of preground :)

Ha, I didnt say buy. Just ask nicely or offer to buy 20grams worth. They'll just give it to you. And if they dont tell everyone on the forum...!
