Phillips and Douwe Egberts have apparently spent 6 years developing and perfecting this unwanted wedding gift.

Good grief. Can filter coffee (which i take this to be, all be it derived from a pod) even have crema (as they claim) ?

Six years working out how to market it to people who should know better, more like.

This sort of thing was the subject of K's article Coffee Colours Your Day, subsequently re-titled "Pods: a revolution in espresso?" in the Dutch and French versions.

(K is Neku's other half, btw, for those that don't know).

At least, they don't claim to make espresso... Others do, grrrrrrr.

Has anyone tried one of these at all? They seem to be on sale everywhere now even my local supermarket caries different makes of pods. I'll asume its stale and over extracted :( unless someone can prove me wrong.

I've tried them. they are all the rage here.

Here's my take.
It makes at least as good a coffee as a normal drip filter (using supermarket beans) but it is CLEAN and EASY. Perfect for the person who cant wait in the morning.
The crema is indeed dodgy.
The taste is inded dodgy to refined palettes.
It makes a dutch style home coffee very well. (Yuck! Sorry Michel).
You gotta buy the rights pods, and they are not cheap. Worse still they are D.E. (Yuck! Yuck!!)

But it takes specialised pods, not ESE ones. These simply come between the water pump outlet and the spout. That is, the pressure is waaaay down compared to ESE style machines so the coffee is extracted like a teabag, definatly not espressed.

My friends tell me that the Sydney flavour is the way to go. (And he is a Kiwi).

I've participated in the buying of two of these now for gifts for friends. (I didnt want to admit that). After we got the first, I was keen to try it, but had low expectations. I was right.

Then when it was suggested to get one for another friend, I asked the kiwi if he liked it, hinting that I was dissapointed and if he wanted to complain before we bought one for another friend now was his chance.

He loves the thing. It makes a somewhat coffeesome drink and he has no mess in the mornings.
It takes about 30 seconds to heat up, and there is NO MESS (did I mention that).

I would NEVER buy one for myself, but I can see their appeal to the untrained coffee newbie.
