Brewing without the smell?

Postby grib » Mon Mar 10, 2008 10:14 am

Here's a weird question, is there a way to brew a pot of coffee without the smell? I started a new job just after christmas in the wonderful world of IT and brought some of my coffee making equipment from my cafe with me. My the boss doesn't like coffee, thankfully though he has been Ok so far, but we've just had a new sales rep start who is allergic to coffee (the horror) and has been complaining about the smell. In all fairness if we used instant it probably wouldn't be as bad, but lets face it, that's not happening. We actually grind our own beans as well as brewing so the smell can be quite potent in a small office. So this morning I've been challenged with the task, is there a way to brew a fresh cup of coffee that will contain the smell? We're happy to sacrifice some of the flavour if needs be.

I'm really baffled about this, hope someone knows.

Any chance you can put your gear in a different part of the building, or how about one of those cold concentrate brewer jobbies that Steve sells? I don't know what it tastes like, don't really like the sound of it to be honest but would probably keep the smell down.

That's one idea Steve, but I'm making nearly as much filter coffee for an office of 20 ppl as I was in my cafe each day, Ive even got in-house trainee "baristas" now; I was offsite for a day and panic ensued because there was no coffee :-)

anti smell thats brilliant! maybe thats how oust works...

options...

1)find somewhere else to make the coffee further from people, store room or something?

2)find somewhere else for those that don't like coffee, once again storeroom?

3) give them some kind of breathing filter mask?

4) learn to love tea

sorry not very helpful.... but i don't think its the brewing that is your problem, the smell of fresh ground coffee is often stronger than the brewed smell.

Think Tristan's on to something there... since they use ground coffee at perfume shops... sniff the coffee in btwn scent testing to neutralise :)

*still recovering from the notion of anyone not liking the smell of quality, fresh coffee*

Looks like the problem is sorted, one of the fellas gave the new boy a slap and told him to wise up. Oh that and we've found a window behind a stack of boxes (seriously!) which is now being opened :D

Thanks guys

Did the lab rats get proper espresso, or did the doctors try to fob them off with cheap instant? :D
