New old toy

Postby Joris » Tue Feb 21, 2006 7:36 pm

My new old toy from Italy arrived... I opened the box and found the little gem in very good condition.... It's an old mokapot made by Stella Brevettata in Italy. On the bottom there's a "Brevetta" number stanced. Inside very clean, outside the chrome is a bit spotted but what do you expect.

You can seperate the heater (oil / alcohol) from the base and the cap from the base comes off as well (it better does otherwise it would be a real hassle getting the ingredients in ;)).

In most modern mokapots the filterbasket with the little tube (don't know the name for that part) comes equipped with the bottom filterscreen fixed. The top filterscreen in the modern devices is usually fixed to the container which catches the coffee. In this device however it consists of seperate parts, the basket, the bottom filterscreen and the top filterscreen. Again, all shiny clean. The gasket doesn't look too worn or brittle so no problem there either.

Then the test... reassembled the thing, with ingredients inserted during the process... used some soleman fuel to fill the heater (it had a brandnew fuse) and lit the thing....

No leaks, no unexpected clouds of steam, no explosions...

Coffee started to drip out off the sprout, at the end even some crema developed.... I didn't dare to drink it though because in my enthousiasm I forgot to clean the thing before I tested it.

All in all I'm happy... a new item for display in my house, and it works as well.

At first I thought I could taste the fuel used for heating but I soon realized (when my pizza tasted like that as well) that it were actually my hands still smelling of it :) So I washed my hands with lemon scented soap and brew a new pot. By the time I could not smell the lemon nor the fuel on my hands the brew was cooled enough to drink and.... tastes as good as any mokapot brew...
