Silvia temp surfing for UK models- questions

Postby simonp » Sun Apr 25, 2004 11:19 pm

A quick question for you Silvia owners. Do you temp surf on your Silvia? and if so what timing do you use? most of the online info is for the 110V models which obviously have a lower powered boiler compared to ours, also the info relates to the 110 deg thermostat wheras and mine will, being only 2 years old, I believe, have a 100 deg one.

BTW I fitted a new grouphead gasket, boy that made it easier to seal the portafilter :D , I only have to turn it slightly to about 7 o'clock instead of about 5 or 4 when I got it! I fitted a new showerscreen too as there were a couple of damaged bits on the old one.

FWIW: The only temp-surf I did on Silvia was not by timing but by volume... I alway's poured two espresso cups full with water to heat up the group-head (and in the same time pre-heat the cups...).
Only when she was on for more than an hour I didn't go by this ritual...
A kitchen without espresso-gear is like a body without a soul.

Sorry for the delayed reply, I've been unwell for a couple of days.

Also posted on CG:

I have a 230V Silvia with 100°C stat.

My routine is: as soon as the grinder is near finishing, I flick the brew switch starting to fill a cup with water until the boiler light comes on. As soon as the light comes on, I remove p/f, clack, pack, tamp, lock p/f back in and dump the water out of the cup which should coincide with the light going off. I then brew straight away.

There may be some tolerance on different t/stats so the above may not work exactly for you.

Thanks Ian,

Hope you're feeling better :)

I think I might stick a thermocouple on the boiler out of scientific curiosity, to see how the temps compare to the US info.

That's a good idea if you have one handy, I would rather be guided by taste than anything else but a comparison would be interesting.

It would be interesting to see if my taste corresponded with the same temps as the US guys.

I suppose one system that would work regardless of boiler power (but not regradless of thermostat) is the reverse temp surfing by time from boiler off.
