ammount of coffee for instant coffee vs normal coffee

Postby maurits » Sun Jun 12, 2005 7:46 pm

I'm looking for information.
For coffee you use approx 7 grams.
Instant coffee is made on 1,2 to 1,6 grams of instant coffee

The question I have is how many coffee is used to make the 1,2 grams of instant powder.

If you know some sources or have the answer please either post it here of send me an e-mail at maurits_foke@yahoo.com

Unless you are a chemist this is a very diffeicult question to answer. However what I can say is that a lot of what is seen as Instant (granuals) is made up to a large extent of water. Water vapour is spayed on to the powder to give it more of a coffee look.

So does, spray drying and freeze drying look any different before they spray it to make it into granules? Just curious as I have to put up with this stuff at work. Does anyone else get looked at like a nut when you tell them its all filth but you have a need?? (probably only for those of us who dont work in the coffee industry)

Make a vacuum flask of paper filtered coffee then - or leave the stuff needed to do that in the work kitchen, all you need is a pourover filter holder, filter papers and coffee (assuming you've a kettle already if you drink instant). You really don't want to be bothered with cleaning a french press or permenant metal-mesh filter at work.

Statistically the following conversion is being used:
1,5 gr soluble = 6 gr roasted coffee
