Is there anyway or has anyone tried sound proofing the vibe pump in their machine.......i've never been happy with the loud crappy noise they make.
Would wrapping it in some sound deadening material do the job? I fear it may help a little but still may be very noise due to the way it attaches to the body of the machine. It tends to vibrate the entire machine. |

Me too cr. My gaggia makes a noise enough to scare the bejeesus out of small children and animals. Worse still is the grinder- last time it was fired up in front of my baby the screams nearly spoiled the 'spresso!
Sound insulation is a sound idea.
But I too have no idea how to quiet the firey beasts. (Coffee equipment that is- children can only be quietened by Peppa Pig or sound proofed bunkers.)
Or do we need to go rotary..? |

Hi guys!
I can completely agree with the noise complaints! My classic wakes me up way before the espresso hits my lips!
If you could get hold of some sound-deadening sheet used in cars and mounted the pump on the sheet that is in turn stuck to the inside of your machine, this would most certainly deaden some of the sound, however I can't think of a way to get the pump secured unless you used some crazy adhesive.
I'm sure there are less drastic ways to achieve this. |

Hi guys,
outboard the pump and stick it somewhere far away from the machine, like under the sink.
Personally I would try to soundprooof the pump as it will probably get hot and you will shorten it's life.

| Vibe pumps themselves are not loud. It's all the sheet metal and framework that resonate with the pump that make the noise. The only solution is to suspend them from coil springs and isolate them from the rest of the machine. if they are connected directly by copper tubing it is necessary to replace the direct connection with flexible pressure hoses. If you open up the machine you may find that the problem is direct contact of the pump body to part of the frame or body work. That can usually be eliminated by bending part of the frame that holds the pump or by judicious use of sound deadening material. Cheap foam is not gooe because it breaks down with heat and disintegrates. |

I have a La Pavoni PUB....the machine was around £1500. I remember the first time i used it i thought "this doesn't sound like a £1500 machine".
My missus gets up earlier than me on a morning and when she fires up the machine it wakes me up. I've nevr been happy with the noise since i go it but it does make a fantastic coffee.
My vibe pump is mounted on flexi clear plastic hoses. It is then mounted to the machine via a metal bar and a couple of rubber mounts. I agree that the majority of the noise comes from the sheet metalwork of the machine itself. I'm going to experiment with ways of stopping this noise.
I'm not sure of the life shortening thing........at the end of the day the machines pump probably runs for no more than a couple of minutes a day in say 4 or 5 short intervals. I'd agreee with the overheating if i were using contsantly in a commercial environment. |

I've thought about making a jacket form an old car innertube packed with foam and then use 3-4 soft springs to hold it in the body of the machine. What you reckon?
I'd love to go rotary but don't really know what needs to be done for the conversion. |

Hi guys,

I can't agree with this, I once demounted the pump from my Andreja and held it in my hands while it was working. Loud as hell. But then again I think that rotary pumps are quite noisy as well, so I might be noise sensitive.

I just did a little double take - because i didn't think this is possible.
My bicycle has innertubes. Always will, until solid tyres become much much better. And buses and trucks have innertubes. But the vehicles in between - eg cars - don't tend to.
(Just checked this -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inner_tube#Inner_tube
).
You could try a bike inner tube, though!
Must admit, even though my grinders are v v loud, I'm so glad not to have a vibe pump in the house. |

| yeah i didn't specifically mean car........i used to be an aircraft engineer so i'll get my mate to rob an innertube from an old aeroplane wheel. |

| As a totally meaningless aside, I found out on the weekend that even the tire on my wheelbarrow is tubeless. Fortunately, I can get a tube to fit in it, but it's irritating because the tire itself is very thin and is easily penetrated by a small thorn. That's what I get for buying a wheelbarrow from a garden market. |

Perhaps this is why I like TMC - where else would you find details like that, in the space of one thread? |

It's funny where the topic of coffee takes you.......if this thread develops any more seemingly random stuff it should possibly be moved to the 'off-topic' section
My barrow has a solid tyre but i do like a pnuematic tyre for going up a plank into a skip........easier to get it over the front lip if you let a little air out of the tyre. |

| Now all we need to to is get some kind of high pressure rotary connector so the unification of vibe pump and barrow tyre can take place. Then you could have variable hydraulic pressure. |
