Consumers need to change their entire mindset before FairTrade can actually make a difference to the lives of millions of people.

Fair comment, but closer to home, the local farmers get 30p per lb for lamb. They don't believe it's a fairtrade price. I don't know what the answer is - it's a crazy market/world we live in.

I just saw that the cinestar in germany has a "docu week" this week, and they're showing Black Gold aka "Schwarzes Gold".

See cinestar.de for more info and select your local cinema.
In Bielefeld the movie plays today 14:30 and 20:00!

Finally! He wrote a "k" in my name! Oh so many thanks Smile

Yes, together with a co-barista. Definitly on a must see list for every afficinado ... made well, very frightening at times.

But this is what I don't like in these kind of films: it's kind-of a propaganda film, just for the "other side". By no means I say that there are no problems in coffee world and they're not serious, but when watching such movies I always ask myself "what's the intention of those making it, and the peoples portraited" ... the answer I make up in my mind doesn't always please myself, be it the new york futures trader, or be it the ethiopien trade union's man.

But nevertheless, a great film, with emphasis on many important things. A good compilation of contrasting situations, from the farmer to the coffee drinker and back.

edit: typo

Black Gold gets its official UK & Ireland cinema release on 8 June 2007. How widely it will be distributed remains to be seen.

Not showing at a Starbucks near you

Its worth seeing - it does only give one perspective though. One great scene in the original Starbucks in Pike place market - best quote from the manager about how thier brand touches so many people blurb. There is also a very short clip from the WBC finals in Bern - a certain barista who was in the top 6 doesnt come accross very well (don't worry Jim its not you).
The director is trying to get as many people to sign up on the website as possible to commit to seeing it so that he can get broader distribution. We've put a link on our website - would suggest that others who can do so also.

I think the way that Starbucks was picked out as the bad guy is a little unfair. I'm in no way a Starbucks fan, but there are far worse offenders out there (Nestle, Craft, Sarah lee, Proctor and Gamble to name a few). The one dimensional view that Fair Trade is the only way didn't really explore the other possibilities. I think it also missed the point about over production of poor quality coffee, which drives the price down (this is a plan by the big roasters so this happens). For instance if you took Vietnam out of the coffee equation overnight the price of coffee would rise by around 20-30% straight away. Even with a 10% rise the market price would far exceed the fair trade price rendering it useless. If it had just acknowledged the speciality side of coffee that consistently pays well above the fair trade price it would have been something. And the treatment of Sammy on the Barista comp was again a cheap shot.

But its very well put together and very beautiful film, and it will get people talking and asking more questions which has to be good, and if my expectations hadn't been raised with what it could have been I'm sure I'd be saying a well put together piece. So for me could have been more but at least its been made, that has to be a step forward.

Fair point Steve about SBUX, far worse out there as you point out. You could also argue that the film didn't highlight the internal political issues in Ethiopia enough either, which are certainly pertinent to the plight of smallholders.

Setting coffee and Ethiopian politics aside for one moment, the film could easily have been made about so many crops, and I think what it does do is to starkly contrast the subsistence agricultural economies of so much of Africa with industrialised trading blocks in the north in a way which at times is often bleak but one which certainly forms a most relevant insight and for me that is its true value.

Returning to coffee, it is worthy of note that in Ethiopia the implementation of Fairtrade in the late 90's has been largely responsible for opening access to traceable speciality coffees from that country. The economic opportunities it offered were the deciding factor in the goverments agreement to allow for the bypass of the auction system. Prior to the formation of these large FT orientated coffee unions in Ethiopia it was extremely difficult to source traceable coffee through the auction system with any degree of certainty or reliability. Sure there were/are some good exporters there but you seldom truly knew where your coffee was coming from at smallholder level. The Ethiopian version of CofE, ECAFE, has also assisted here in more recent times but take a look at the auction results and >90% of the winners are members of the unions. The internal market in Ethiopia in recent years has at times been completely at odds with the NYBOT and the driver for this has been demand for high quality FT coffee washed G1 and G2, this in turn has bumped up the differentials significantly in the conventional market through the auction. Credit where credit is due to Tadesse I feel.

I have not seen the movie yet. I wonder how up-to-date the movie is. Coffee prices have come a long way from a low of $41.50 (per 100lbs) in December 01 to $103.75 yesterday (26 April 07).

And the price 35 years ago was three times what it is today and on 14 April 1972 reached $3.35 / lb and averaged >$1.20 for most of the 70, 80, and 90's. Ultimately this is not really the point though and the film is about disparities in the value chain as much as the headline figures.

Edit - sorry got my years wrong 1977 Embarassed

I think my frustration with the film was that it felt as if the film makers had read Wild's "Black Gold" and had decided to make a film with a very specific agenda from the outset. Sadly Wild's book is a little out of date and isn't a complete picture of the industry.

Perhaps they didn't read the book, though I'm guessing the shared title and style of logo indicates some connection. However I am hopeful of a film that shows a little more of speciality coffee and the benefits of buying better coffee.

Again I think that Jim has a fair point in that it could have done more to talk about the other trading options that are out there. I think it tried to with Illy where the inference on the interview with Ernesto Illy was that they buy good coffee and pay a reasonable price however this was not that clear and there are better examples out there. However Illy and SBUX are household names so it is fair enough to attempt to demonstrate points via these brand vehicles (although -ve for SBUX). And I think this is the point, in that the film at times fails to drive home its agenda (nothing wrong with having one) and the narrative at times gets a bit rambly as a result (or visa versa).
