A film called "Black Gold" is showing during the London Film Festival.

Quote:

An exploration of the global coffee industry (worth over $80 billion a year) provides the impetus for Black Gold, a politically direct and vital documentary from filmmakers Marc and Nick Francis which will certainly leave viewers with plenty to stew on when next ordering a latte or cappuccino. As profits for multinational coffee companies continue to increase, the price paid for coffee harvests have fallen to such an extent that farmers in some of the world's poorest countries are forced to abandon their crops. Ethiopia, recognised as the birthplace of coffee, is one of the hardest hit countries, and the film follows Tadesse Meskela, General Manager of a co-operative union that represents some 70,000 struggling Ethiopian farmers, as he goes on an international campaign to promote the plight of his members and seek to establish a fair trade market for their produce. The journey brings him into the offices of coffee giants Nestlé and Kraft, who seek to maintain low prices for beans; to the coffee commodity exchanges in New York and London, where daily prices are set; and to a branch of Starbucks, illustrating how the customers' demand for coffee has grown in the last decade.

I trust that the owners of the festival web site will not object to my lifting the above quote from their site as my objective is the same as theirs: to bring this film to your attention.

A TMC must-see, if you can get there.

For more details and to book, visit the festival's web site.

Hi. If you put a search in for Black Gold on Google (pages from UK) it comes up with a link to BBC World Home Page - 7th link down in my browser. This goes to the Film Focus page and on this page there are quotes from the Director and a link to a trailer of the film. (Trying to access the page directly from a link wouldn't work for me).

Thanks for the heads-up

I'd heard this revied on the CoffeeGeek podcast and the Portafilter podcast.

I'll be at the screening on the 20th, anyone else coming along, keen to catch up for a coffee (or other drink) afterwards?

I'll do some kind of review for sure, dont want a pass for the whole event though just for the screening. I saw that and got frightened. Looks like it may have to be a trip to London Town after all.

I am going to try and see it in London - if I can sort my life out!

Reviews have been positive - in that it has tried to address some genuine and intersting/important issues in coffe - and also negative - it only presents one side and says nothing for the people doing a good job/paying good prices for great coffee.

I shall try and blog review it, if I go.

Wow, what a movie!

I won't give anything away here as I am conscious that there are people who have not yet seen the movie.

Worth seeing, a great reality check for all of us.

Some of the facts & figures are simply astounding.

There didn't appear to be too many 'coffee folk' at the London screening. There were a lot of Film Festival Groupees, a whole load of the movie's production team (including the filmmakers themselves) and a few press / charity workers too.

Overall I liked the film, but have been unable to get some images out of my head all weekend.

Consumers need to change their entire mindset before FairTrade can actually make a difference to the lives of millions of people.
