Roasting - Equipment and Techniques - My sweet new (old) little mechanical French roaster zapty - May 13, 2006 - 07:39 PM Post subject: My sweet new (old) little mechanical French roaster
Just bought a nice little French roaster ( R.Moulin 1 rue des orphelines Le Havre) is the inscription on the brass plaque.
It is a little mechanical marvel that you wind up like a clock and then you move a lever and it rotates the little vessel by itself through some gears and a spring in a housing.
It has a lever for adjusting the speed to slow or fast and stop.
This picture is one from a antique shop in France where I first noticed it but it was way too expensive to buy.
Mine is exactly the same and in the same condition but without the little charcoal container underneath the roasting vessel or the wind up key that are both missing.
A windup key was quickly made, the roaster functions perfectly but just needs some cleaning and greasing the gears. I have started taking it apart for a good cleaning and some maintenance.
It is a sweet little thing that should work just fine with a little (period) brass burner underneath the roasting vessel.
Very well made and a fine addition to my collection.
I imagine it can roast 100 grams at a time no problem but will ofcourse test it once ready.

I love this little thing myself and had been on the lookout for it for a while now. Will be fun playing with it.
Too bad you live so far away George or we could have a ball (no pun intended) doing different roasts in my old roasters.
Move to Holland why don't ya?
Hopefully I will be able to buy the farm house that I'm bidding on and then I can arrange a roasters get together at my place.
There will be a roasters get together from a German site I am a member off (Kaffee-Netz) in Mönchengladbach (Germany) in August which I might attend with a couple off my roasters.

That's a beauty.
You'd almost expect it to play music aswell.
Nice find.
